Building Utilities & Operation Compartment

The ELI-NP facility covers an area of approx. 33,000 m2 of high quality, energy efficient buildings, mostly dedicated to the high-power laser system, gamma-beam production system and instrumentation for experiments, but also to offices, guest house and canteen buildings. The state-of-the-art scientific equipment requires special clean-rooms, and specific temperature and humidity conditions and hence first-class utilities and operation.
The HVAC system covers a climatized area of more than 21,000 m2 and is designed to operate 24/7/365 via an intelligent microprocessor control system. The system thus ensures an operational cost economy of more than 625,000 Euro per year while also delivering best quality services.

The Building Utilities and Operations Compartment oversees the optimal functionality of the built environment according to designed parametres. Operations and maintenance includes:

  • the day-to-day activities necessary for the built structure, its systems and equipment, and occupants/users to perform their intended function;
  • support for the integration of the equipment and experimental set-up with the building;
  • small construction and instalation works.

Laser and Laboratory Building: basement + ground, total area 7.041 m2, vol 75.733 cubic meters

Gamma Building: partial basement + ground, total area 6.958 m2, vol. 160.034 cubic meters

Office Building: 5-storey building, total area 6.958 m2, vol. 160.034 cubic meters

Hotel Building: 2-storey building and canteen, total area 1012 m2, vol. 12.408 cubic meters

  • over 21,000 m2 climatized area;
  • the system was designed to operate non-stop, 365 days / year, 24/7
  • total installed thermal capacity : 6.10 MW higher
  • the number of geothermal heat pumps : 183
  • ground heat exchanger length : 135.0 Km ( 1070 Geoexchange drilling at 120 m depth)
  • intelligent microprocessor control system and operated via the Internet, type: Direct Digital Controls (DDC)
  • over 625,000 Euro / year the economy in the first year in operating costs compared to the classic solution (gas & chillers)
  • over 48 million Euro economy during 30 years compared to the classic solution
  • framing grid energy efficiency class "B" less than 233 kWh / m2 / year

Ground heat exchanger system is a closed geo-exchange circuit which consists of a total of 1080 geothermal drilling with a depth of 120 m.

  • drills are grouped each 60 to a manifold
  • each manifold contains a collector and a distributor
  • from the 18 distributor/collector, a pair of main geothermal pipes (flow/return) lead to the pumping station which manages the amount of energy extracted from the ground in the cold season and the amount of energy injected into the ground in the warm period, respectively
  • from the pumping station, energy is distributed to each of the 9 substations in the ELI-NP infrastructure (HVAC plants and technological chilled water plants)
  • ground heat exchanger length: 135.0 km
  • over 625,000 Euro / year the economy in the first year in operating costs compared to the classic solution ( gas & chillers )
  • over 48 million Euro economy during 30 years compared to the classic solution
  • framing grid energy efficiency class "B" less than 233 kWh / m2 / year
