Magurele is situated in the southern outskirts of Bucharest, in a campus concentrating a large part of the Physics research in Romania.
With a long tradition in both Nuclear Physics (the institute being built in the 1950’s around a nuclear research reactor) and Laser Physics
(here is where the laser effect has been demonstrated in 1964, Romania being the 4th country in the world achieving this),
Magurele was a natural location for the Nuclear Physics pillar of ELI.
You can reach the Bucharest-Otopeni airport (OTP) (“Henri Coanda” International Airport) by one of the numerous flights that connect the capital of
Romania with all major European airports.
The airport is connected to Bucharest by public transportation (bus lines 780 and 783) and taxi service (see the
Information page for further details).
There is a good connection between the airport and ELI-NP, using buses
780
(from the airport to Gara Basarab stop) and then
781 (from Gara Basarab to ELI-NP).

Gara Basarab is also an important metro hub, placed near the main train station of Bucharest,
Gara de Nord, so it can be easily reached via metro from anywhere in Bucharest.

Spitalul Universitar is also a good connection with the metro network (
Eroilor Metro station).
Depending on the route: you will pass over
the bridge (4) if you are coming from Bucharest, or under it if coming from the
Ring road (Eastbound or Westbound). After 100 m, you will enter
a roundabout (3)
and you should take the third exit (towards left). After a few hundred meters, passing through a forest, there is a street going
towards right, just at the entrance of a large parking lot. Follow this road (orange dotted on the map below) and you will arrive in the
ELI-NP Parking (0).
