ELI-NP Autumn School - ELIAS - introducing students and young scientists to the secrets of high-power lasers and their applications

2022-10-14

This year's edition of the ELIAS school was hosted at IFIN-HH/ELI-NP Training and Conference Center in Magurele, Romania, from 3rd to 7th of October 2022. It was a hybrid event and attracted many young scientists interested in the physics of high-power lasers from Romania and abroad. A diverse group of almost 60 participants attended the ELIAS 2022 school in person while as many as 30 joined online.
ELIAS 2022 was a very popular event for students and early-stage researchers, offering insights into the research opportunities at ELI-NP and also serving as an important outreach activity contributing to building the future user community of ELI-NP. This year participants represented a variety of European nationalities and institutions but the interest extends far beyond the European Research Area with participants from all over the world taking advantage of the offered hybrid streaming option of the lectures.
The lecture program included 10 speakers covering topics starting from an introductory level to more advanced seminars on specific ELI-NP developments relevant for beamtime preparation. ELIAS 2022 provided an opportunity for students to interact directly with speakers and lectures, as well as ELI-NP scientists and staff.

The school aimed at introducing students and young post-doctoral researchers to the field of high power lasers, with emphasis on several topics, such as: laser technologies and facilities, laser metrology, high energy density physics and Inertial Confinement Fusion, laser driven ions acceleration, electron acceleration, strong field quantum electrodynamics, radiotherapy and FLASH effect.
Students also had the chance to present their own work during poster sessions, which resulted in rich discussion and exchange of ideas between students and speakers. The competition for best poster was tight and we had four winners this year.
The organizers included in the social program a visit to one of the most iconic museums in Bucharest and a dinner to a Romanian traditional restaurant.
On the last day, at the closing of the school, Prof. Sydney GALES concluded that the event had brought students face to face with world-renowned researchers who were pushing the boundaries of scientific excellence.

We would like to thank again all participants for attending the ELI-NP Autumn School 2022 either in person in Magurele or online and all the lecturers for their contributions.
Looking forward to meeting you in 2023 at the next edition of ELIAS!
