2023-02-15

On the 14th and 15th of February 2023, the Executive Agency for Higher Education, Research, Development and Innovation Funding, as the Research Program Operator for EEA and Norwegian Grants, organized the conference: "Working together for a quick diagnosis and better treatments for cancer. EEA & Norway Grants contributions to EU Mission Cancer". Conference Agenda

The presentations and discussions addressed to the beneficiaries of the EU, EEA & Norway Grants and National Funding Programs, in order to facilitate connections and networking between researchers and stakeholders towards reaching better prevention and treatments.

Considering the worldwide incidence of cancer and the subsequent implications at the society level, ELI-NP is going to establish a Hadronic Therapy Center as an integrant part of its development plan. In this respect, the Project Director Dr. Calin A. Ur, gave a presentation on "Research on medical laser applications at ELI-NP". Dr. Ur mentioned that the cancer treatment occupies a very important place within the ELI-NP researchers' approach for the development of innovative applications and presented three complementary directions in the medical field that are possible to be enhanced with the help of the 10 PW High-Power Laser System developed at ELI-NP: radiotherapy, X-ray imaging and production of isotopes. All these directions, aiming to considerably improve the life quality of the patients, will allow a more accurate treatment of cancer at a lower cost.

This Joint Call for Users includes all three of the ELI Facilities, thanks to a close collaboration between ELI ERIC and the "Horia Hulubei" National Institute of Physics and Nuclear Engineering (IFIN-HH), and the support of the Horizon 2020 Project IMPULSE.

The conference ended with the visit of the attendees to the ELI-NP research infrastructure, that allowed the opportunity to observe the ongoing experiments and identify the common points of interest concerning the transfer of technologies/results from laboratories to market, for the benefit of the patients and the medical system.
