On March 3, 2023, ELI-NP received the visit of a delegation from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs composed of Janina Sitaru, State Secretary for Inter-institutional Relations and Andrei Luca, Director of the Department of Cultural Diplomacy, Education and Science.
The discussions held with the ELI-NP Director, Dr. Calin Ur, focused on two main levels: the presentation of the current state of the research infrastructure and the identification of new opportunities for cooperation. It was emphasized that ELI-NP successfully made the transition from project implementation to its operation as a center for users, following the first call for users, made jointly with ELI-ERIC, have been selected projects from France, Italy, Germany, Great Britain, Spain, Poland, Israel, India, Canada and Romania.
The MFA delegation was also informed about the projects that ELI-NP will develop in the following period: the creation of a Center for High-Power Optics, necessary for the manufacture or repair of high-power optical components used at ELI-NP or at other laser centers around the world, and the establishment of a Hadron-therapy Center, which will use one of the most advanced cancer treatment methods.
During the discussions, the MFA delegation reiterated the importance of scientific diplomacy within international partnerships, as well as the need of an increased research cooperation and active support for the European and International promotion of the ELI-NP research infrastructure.
