NASA Administrator visiting ELI-NP

On Friday, October 18, 2024, NASA Administrator Bill Nelson visited ELI-NP, as part of a broader initiative to strengthen international collaboration in space sciences and their applications, and beyond, in the framework of the Artemis project of NASA, "a set of commonsense principles to commit to the peaceful exploration of space". At start, IFIN-HH Director General, Nicolae Marius Marginean, and ELI-NP Director, Calin Alexandru Ur, introduced the institute and ELI-NP. During the visit, NASA Administrator Bill Nelson had than the opportunity to meet ELI-NP researchers and students, sharing the motivation and efforts and accomplishments gained by pursuing high level research in this world-class scientific environment.


ELI-NP Technical Director, Ioan Dancus, introduced to NASA Administrator and Director General of ROSA, Daniel Cunteanu, the laboratories of ELI-NP.



ELI-NP Director, Calin Alexandru Ur, presented the PhD training program, developed together with the National University of Science and Technology POLITEHNICA Bucharest and the Technical University of Darmstadt, in the field of Nuclear Photonics.



While meeting both young and senior researchers of ELI-NP, presenting their scientific achievements and future plans, Bill Nelson highly praised their work and scientific performances.

Meeting the head of the Gamma Beam Experiments Department, Dimiter Balabanski, in the Gamma Spectroscopy Laboratory.



Technology development engineer, Mihail Cernaianu, presents the 1 PW and 10 PW experimental areas and discusses about possible laser-driven studies for space applications.



In the X-ray Imaging Laboratory young engineer Nicoleta Safca presented the phase contrast X-ray imaging method and its fascinating applications, developed together with Senior Researcher Dan Stutman.



Meeting the former ELI-NP Scientific Director, Kazuo Tanaka, the discussions highlighted the international dimension of the ELI-NP research center.





Ending, NASA Administrator Bill Nelson expressed his high appreciation for the scientific status of ELI-NP, the outstanding achievements of its scientists and its sound perspectives as an international reference Center at the forefront of Science.
