Dr. Gabriel Bleotu received the award for "Best PhD Thesis"

2024-12-20

Our colleague, Dr. Gabriel Petrisor Bleotu, has received the award for "Best PhD Thesis" in the category of Exact Sciences and Engineering. This title was conferred by the Senate of the University of Bucharest during the 8th edition organized on 18th December 2024. All started from the "Passion for Extreme Light" Nobel Laureate Prof. Gerard Mourou.

The PhD thesis, titled "Investigation of Pulse Duration Reduction and Intensity Increase of Petawatt-Class Laser Systems," focused on and demonstrated the enhancement of laser pulse intensities in the terawatt (1012 W) and petawatt (1015 W) ranges. The thesis was conducted under a joint supervision arrangement by Prof. Dr. Habil. Daniel Ursescu (Romania) and Prof. Dr. Julien Fuchs (France).
This thesis brought innovation through experiments carried out in Romania at ELI-NP and in France at Apollon, LASERIX, and LULI, where the post-compression method (proposed by Nobel Laureate Prof. Gerard Mourou) was demonstrated at energy levels in the Joule range.
With this study, a significant step towards high-power laser upgrades (Exawatt class) and laser-matter interaction for particle acceleration has been successfully implemented. "Today, I am following my passion for Extreme Light in the pursuit of more, hoping that my work will make a significant contribution to the scientific and medical fields." Dr. Gabriel P. Bleotu.
