On April 26, His Excellency Mr. KATAE Takashi, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Japan in Romania, and embassy staff visited the headquarter of ELI-NP, the most powerful laser system in the world. They were met by Dr. Nicolae Marginean, the General Director of "Horia Hulubei" National Institute for R&D in Physics and Nuclear Engineering and Dr. Calin A. UR, the ELI-NP Project Director.
The joint investment in a new factory of special mirrors for scientific experiments hold the central line of the meeting. Following the Memorandum of Understanding signed in 2023 by ELI-NP/IFIN-HH Magurele, the Institute of Laser Engineering at Osaka University and the Japanese company Okamoto Optics, high-power mirrors will be produced in a center to be constructed by the National Company of Investments on a site near the Magurele laser.
Several other topics sparked discussions, including the key role of international collaborations in research, the societal benefits and how research institutions may leverage innovation. The ELI-NP scientific programs were also discussed.
The visit of the high officials included a tour of the ELI-NP research facility. They met with research groups and discussed the importance of state-of-the-art technology in advancing research in the field.
